The Costa de Oro is one of the most versatile coastal regions of Uruguay. Long sandy beaches, green residential streets, and small coastal towns make the region interesting for both vacationers and people who can imagine a life outside the big cities.

In short: The Gold Coast stretches between Montevideo and Punta del Este and includes numerous smaller coastal towns such as Atlántida, Parque del Plata, and La Floresta. The region combines beach, nature, and relatively quiet living with good connections to the capital and other important places along the coast.

What makes the Gold Coast special?
When people think of Uruguay, they often first think of Punta del Este. However, between Montevideo and Punta del Este lies a coastal region that has its own charm: the Costa de Oro, the Gold Coast of Uruguay. Long sandy beaches, green streets lined with pines and eucalyptus trees, and small coastal towns shape the landscape. Here, life is often more relaxed than in the large resort towns. This is exactly what makes the region interesting for vacationers and people who envision a life in Uruguay.

Small towns with a lot of character
The Gold Coast consists of numerous towns, each with its own charm. Atlántida is one of the most well-known places. Here you can find restaurants, cafés, shops, and a beautiful beach promenade. Especially in summer, there is a lot going on. Parque del Plata is also popular and connects residential areas with a relaxed beach atmosphere. Those who prefer it quieter should check out La Floresta or Costa Azul. Here you will find green streets, cozy houses, and many lovely spots where you can simply unwind.

Not far from Montevideo and Punta del Este
A major advantage of the Gold Coast is its location. Atlántida is about 45 to 50 kilometers east of Montevideo. By car, you can reach the capital in about an hour under normal traffic conditions. Punta del Este is also easily accessible and is located about 80 to 100 kilometers further east, depending on your starting point. This makes the region suitable not only for a beach vacation but also for people who want to live a bit more quietly while still taking advantage of the proximity to larger cities.

Summer and winter on the Gold Coast
In summer, especially from December to March, the region comes to life. Families spend their holidays by the sea, the beaches fill up, and in the evenings people gather in restaurants or enjoy a walk by the water. Many shops and restaurants are open longer during this time, and events take place in the coastal towns. In winter, the Gold Coast shows a different side. Between June and August, it becomes noticeably quieter. The temperatures are milder than in many parts of Europe, but they can still be quite cool and windy. During the day, they often range between about 10 and 16 degrees. Rain and humid days are also part of the season. The beaches are often almost deserted and invite long walks. Those who live here enjoy the tranquility and the change of seasons. However, some seasonal shops and restaurants have limited opening hours in winter or remain temporarily closed. In larger towns like Atlántida, you can also find shopping options and essential services outside of the summer season.

Live where others vacation
For people looking to emigrate to Uruguay, the Gold Coast can be an interesting alternative to living in Montevideo. The proximity to the water, the green surroundings, and the various residential areas offer many possibilities. The infrastructure also varies depending on the location. In Atlántida, there are numerous shops and services, while smaller communities tend to impress with their tranquility and nature. Montevideo is easily accessible for shopping, official errands, or appointments. Those looking for a house will find different options - from cozy homes with gardens to properties near the beach. Particularly beautiful are the plots with old trees that give many houses their typical coastal character.

Discover the Gold Coast itself
The Costa de Oro is best experienced on a trip along the coast. It's worth stopping at various places, driving through the streets, and enjoying a coffee with a view of the water. Perhaps it's the vibrant Atlántida that appeals to you. Or maybe you'll find a place where you feel immediately at home in La Floresta or Parque del Plata. The Gold Coast shows a different side of Uruguay: less glamorous than Punta del Este, but often relaxed, green, and close to the water. It’s precisely the mix of beach, nature, and proximity to Montevideo that makes it a region worth exploring.
