A new public high school for ciclo básico students is being built in San Carlos. The education administration ANEP has awarded the construction work for around 106 million Uruguayan Pesos. The project is part of the further expansion of educational infrastructure in the Departamento Maldonado.

In short: The new high school is to be built on a 2,800 square meter site in the area of the former train station in San Carlos. The construction work has been awarded to Impacto Construcciones S.A. On October 19, further details about the architecture and implementation will be presented.

What is planned?
The Administración Nacional de Educación Pública, or ANEP, has awarded the construction work for a new high school in San Carlos. An investment of 106 million Pesos from the national budget is planned. The educational center is to accommodate ciclo básico students - that is, the first years of secondary education in Uruguay.

The location is the site of the former AFE train station in San Carlos. The necessary agreements for the use of the property are to be officially signed on October 19. At this meeting, further information about the architectural design of the new school building will also be announced.

A long-planned project
The efforts for the new Liceo date back to 2017, according to Deputy Joaquín Garlo. In recent years, there have been repeated delays in providing the necessary land. Only recently have agreements been reached that advance not only this project but also other planned educational buildings in San Carlos and Piriápolis. ANEP is also to provide the necessary teaching equipment for the new facilities.

Why is this interesting for families?
For families living in the Departamento Maldonado or planning a move to this region, the expansion of educational infrastructure is a relevant topic. San Carlos is one of the important cities in the department and is growing just like other parts of the region. New school locations can help relieve existing facilities and better distribute educational offerings regionally. Especially for families with school-age children, not only the distance to the nearest school is interesting, but also how the infrastructure will develop in the coming years.

Conclusion
With the new Liceo, San Carlos will receive another public educational institution. The investment of 106 million pesos shows that the Departamento Maldonado continues to invest in additional school capacities.

However, further steps are still necessary before the opening. The specific architectural details and the further timeline are yet to be announced.
